“It was July of 2019 and Jensen was enjoying her first trek to the Great White North. It included a performance at the Calgary Stampede, where she performed on the Coca-Cola Stage. Growing up in rural Australia, Jensen had heard about the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth. She never thought she would be performing there.
“It was really a dream come true,” says Jensen, in a phone interview with Postmedia from her home in Sydney, Australia. “When my name was called out, I remember walking into the middle of the stage and I literally had to just stop for a second and look around, take a breath and just take it all in. Often, we do get these amazing experiences. Every now and then they come up and you can really regret not taking that minute. I really remember walking out and looking out and thinking, ‘Wow, I can’t believe I’m here right now.’ It’s the sort of thing I’ll remember for the rest of my life. It was the beginning of something amazing. I just knew it in my bones.”
The trip to Calgary would prove fruitful in other ways, namely the creation of a single, Breakin’ Hearts, that debuted at No. 1 on iTunes Australia earlier this month and hit regular rotation on that country’s major radio stations. It’s now hitting the playlists of country radio in Canada as well.
Jensen had been touring with Amy Nelson, a Regina-based singer-songwriter who has also found success in Australia. While Jensen was in town, Nelson introduced her to Troy Kokol, a Calgary-based Metis songwriter and producer, and Calgary songwriter Chris O’Neil and the three decided to write a song together.
“She is so talented and has a work ethic like I’ve never seen.” says Kokol, in an interview from his Calgary studio Reluctant Cowboy Music.
